Best Janitor AI Alternative: One Companion Who Remembers You, No Proxy Needed

Janitor AI is one of the biggest AI character chat sites on the web. Run by JanitorAI Inc. at janitorai.com, it says it has more than 15 million users, and its safety page talks about millions of daily active users. People come for a huge library of community-made bots, a free built-in model called JLLM, and the freedom to plug in other AI models through a proxy. It is for adults only: its terms require users to be 18 or older.

Nastia is a different kind of product, also strictly for adults 18 and over. Instead of a giant public library, you design one companion of your own, chat uncensored, hear them in voice messages, and see them: ask for a picture in the middle of a conversation, then turn it into a short video. It is worth being fair before comparing. Janitor AI gets a lot right, and for some people it is the best tool there is:

• A huge, free community library. Its help center says the free tier includes unlimited chats with millions of bots. Creators tag bots by genre, from magical and RPG to horror, comedy and anime, so there is always something new to open, and creators get verification and an analytics dashboard.
• Free, and promising to stay free. JLLM, the house model, is built in and costs nothing. When Janitor launched its first subscription in June 2026, it said plainly that the free version stays exactly the same, and its janitor+ page still reads "Free stays free."
• Bring your own model. In API settings you can connect an external model through a proxy, for example through OpenRouter, which Janitor's own quickstart guide walks you through. That flexibility is a real draw if you like to pick your model, your prompt and your temperature.
• Deep tools for power users. Bots are built from a personality field plus optional scripts and lorebooks that feed in background details when keywords come up. You can keep many personas and, since March 2026, switch between them mid-chat. Public chats let others read, react to, fork and continue your best stories.
• Adult text roleplay is allowed. Its community guidelines permit adult content between consenting adult characters, inside a clear list of rules.

If you love browsing community-written bots and tinkering with models, Janitor AI is hard to beat. The trade-offs show up when you want one companion who remembers you, pictures and voice, and nothing to set up.

Janitor AI's rules are worth reading closely. Its community guidelines, last updated in February 2026, allow sexual content between consenting adult characters. They also draw firm lines: no minor characters at all, no characters whose age is unclear, and no pornographic or nude imagery, including on bot images. Everything published is screened by automated systems first, and full-time human moderators review reports. Its safety page counts more than 20,000 human moderation actions a month.

On phones the rules are stricter by default. Janitor explains that, to stay in the App Store and Google Play, its app starts in a restricted mode that blocks higher-rated characters and hides character definitions. To get the full experience you switch on a setting called Enable NSFW on Mobile from the website, not from inside the app.

Some long-time users feel the platform has tightened over time. In a November 2025 post on the official subreddit, one member said they had come to Janitor to avoid censorship and were disappointed by new limits, such as removing blood and weapons and no longer allowing actors in profile images (r/JanitorAI_Official ). Nastia is built the other way round: chat is uncensored on every plan, including free, and the only limits are legal and ethical ones, no minors and no real people.

Janitor AI's free tier is generous: unlimited chats, standard chat models and a context limit of around 9k tokens. In June 2026 it added janitor+, its first subscription. When we checked in November 2026, the janitor+ page listed $12.99 billed monthly or $99 billed yearly, which works out to $8.25 a month. It adds:

• Five times more memory than the free tier
• Up to three times faster replies when the site is busy
• Enhanced swipes and rerolls with its best models
• Access to more models
• Cosmetic extras: emojis, a checkmark and a gold username

Better third-party models are a separate cost. janitor+ Router, launched in July 2026, lets subscribers use outside models without an external proxy, billed per token from a prepaid wallet. Its terms say Router credits require an active janitor+ subscription and are final and non-refundable. If you would rather keep your own proxy, you pay your model provider directly, or use whatever free allowance that provider offers. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable too; you cancel on the web through Settings, Billing, Manage Subscription, or through the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed in the app.

Nastia has three plans: Free, Standard at $11.99 a month, and Unlimited at $15.99 a month. Chat is included on every plan, and on Unlimited your messages are unlimited. Pictures and video come from a daily token allowance on Standard and Unlimited that refills every day. There is no wallet to top up and no model menu to price out: one subscription covers the chat, the memory and the pictures.

For long stories, this is the biggest practical difference. Janitor's own help center explains that JLLM can read around 8k to 9k tokens at once. When a chat grows past that, earlier details get pushed out, which it calls "context rot": the bot forgets what happened a few replies ago or mixes up who is who. Its advice is to keep a short, structured summary in the chat memory panel, and keep character definitions lean. janitor+ raises the limit fivefold.

Janitor is open about the rough edges. In April 2026 its changelog called JLLM's habit of repeating itself a known issue at the model level, and a July update cut down the loops. In August 2026 it apologized after a memory experiment meant for a small test group reached everyone and some bots forgot things they should have remembered; it restored memory on about 15,000 chats and added a toggle so the context-saving behavior stays off unless you turn it on.

On Nastia, paid plans include long-term memory that carries across sessions, on Standard as well as Unlimited. Your companion recalls your name, what you told them and the story you are building, so you can pick up a conversation from last week without retelling it.

Janitor AI describes itself as the front end: the place where you chat, build bots and switch models, with the model doing the thinking behind it. That is a strength if you enjoy tuning, and a chore if you do not. Proxy setups mean copying a model name, a URL and an API key into the right fields, and they can break: in April 2026, a redesign of the proxy settings panel wiped some users' saved proxy URLs, models and prompts, which Janitor explained in its changelog.

The subscription has also made some users nervous. In an August 2026 thread about a repeated in-app prompt promising that characters remember more, one commenter reported that a free model they used through a proxy had stopped working and showed a subscription-tier message, while others worried that proxies could end up behind a paywall (r/JanitorAI_Official ). Janitor says Router is offered as an alternative to proxy setups, not a forced migration.

Janitor AI is a text chat platform. Bot images are uploaded by creators and must follow its image rules, with no nudity. When we checked in November 2026, neither its janitor+ page nor its subscription FAQ listed image generation, voice or video. Its janitor+ announcement describes voice and image as plans for the future rather than features you can use today.

Nastia is built around seeing and hearing your companion. On Standard and Unlimited you can ask for a picture of your companion on demand, or use Show me in the middle of a one-on-one chat, and every picture matches the look you designed. You can turn pictures you generate into short uncensored videos. Your companion also sends voice messages, so you hear them in their own voice when they reply. Nastia does not offer voice calls, and it does not accept photo uploads.

Janitor AI is a community first. Creators publish bots, users follow them and comment, and popular chats can be published for others to fork. Some bots play several characters at once, and multi-persona lets you bring more than one of your own characters into a scene. The catch is that the bots are not yours. Janitor's help center explains that a bot disappears from your chats if its creator makes it private or deletes it, or if moderators remove it, and one of the subreddit's top posts of the year jokes about exactly that (r/JanitorAI_Official ).

Nastia is built around one relationship at a time. You design your companion's appearance, personality, backstory and voice, and they stay private to you. When you want a bigger scene, the Unlimited plan lets you bring up to five companions into one group chat.

Janitor AI has a large and very creative community, and its subreddit is full of people sharing roleplay moments and in-jokes. The complaints that do come up are consistent:

• Bots forgetting the story. Long chats outgrow the free context window, which Janitor's own guides describe.
• Upsell fatigue. In August 2026 users in the official subreddit complained about a repeated in-app prompt promising that characters remember more, and one said it appeared in the middle of a chat (r/JanitorAI_Official ).
• Fewer great new bots. In a September 2026 thread, long-time users said the trending page had become generic and many creators had left, and some said they mostly go back to older bots (r/JanitorAI_Official ).
• Tighter rules over time. Some members feel moderation has narrowed what a site for adults allows (r/JanitorAI_Official ).

These are individual reports rather than universal problems. But they line up with what pushes people to look for an alternative: memory that keeps up, nothing to set up, and a companion who is theirs.

Janitor's safety page says it never sells personal data or shares private conversations with third parties for advertising or commercial purposes, and its privacy policy says it does not sell personal data under California law. If you use a proxy, keep in mind that, as Janitor's own glossary puts it, the proxy is the middleman between your chat and the model provider, so your messages also pass through that outside service.

Age checks depend on where you are. Users connecting from Australia, Brazil and the UK must verify their age through k-ID, with facial age estimation, an ID scan or a reusable AgeKey; elsewhere, you confirm you are 18 or older. To delete your account, you go to Settings, Security, Delete account and confirm with a code sent to your email; the account is deactivated first and can be restored during a grace period. We did not find a chat export option in Janitor's help center, so copy anything you want to keep before you leave.
